CYCA members support their community while getting discounts on beer and pizza

By Renee Massey
We’ve survived the oppressive August heat, and there is now hope for cooler weather on the horizon. There are some great events on the horizon, too! Friday, September 16, is the Cooper-Young Festival Friday 4 Miler race where our own CYCA president, June Hurt, will be taking one for the team. When Cooper-Young Community Association memberships are purchased, there is an opportunity to be a LampLighter Benefactor to support the publication of the free newspaper you are reading now. If you missed that opportunity when you purchased your membership (or even if you haven’t purchased yours yet), you can make it up. June will be running the 4 Miler costumed as the one and only Wonder Woman in exchange for pledges to fund the LampLighter. Surely this is worth $5 per mile or more! To make your pledge, contact the CYCA offices at 901-272-2922 or at Then be sure to attend your local Neighbors Light the Way party somewhere along the race route on the evening of the 4 Miler to cheer June and the other runners on to the finish line. If you’d rather run with June than cheer her from the sidelines, register online at, or, or register onsite the day of the race. The 4 Miler starts at 7pm.
When the race is behind us, we still have something to look forward to. Saturday, October 15, the Cooper-Young Regional Beerfest will finally be here! CYCA members will once again reap an extra benefit from their membership – $5 off Beerfest ticket purchases! The CY Regional Beerfest benefits the Cooper-Young Community Association – the same organization that brings you email safety alerts, funds and maintains the trestle art, interacts with governmental agencies on behalf of CY interests, organizes block clubs, and sponsors neighborhood beautification among many other functions. The CY Regional Beerfest will be bringing you great regional beers by outfits like Abita in Louisiana, Yazoo Brewing Co. in Nashville, Oyster House Brewing in North Carolina, Vino’s Brew Pub in Little Rock, and local brewers Ghost River and Boscos to name only a few. There will also be local eats from neighborhood friends Central BBQ and Celtic Crossing and music from the outrageously hip Goner Records. I am sure you do not want to blow your social cool by missing this event, so make plans now to be there. Tickets are available online at Last year’s event sold out, so don’t wait!
In a last bit of membership news for the month, we are happy to welcome Lou’s Pizza Pie at 2158 Young Avenue as our newest membership sponsor. New owner, Harry Ross, is offering CYCA members a 10% discount each time the membership card is shown. If you haven’t renewed your CYCA membership for 2011 and don’t want to miss out on this repeat-offer discount, it’s not too late. You can join by filling out the form on page 3, stopping by the CYCA offices at 2298 Young Avenue, or visiting our website at Your membership card is your ticket to the great discounts at the CY Regional Beerfest, Lou’s Pizza Pie, and many others local businesses. Join today and find out why we say, “Life is good in Cooper-Young!”
