Peabody Elementary School: CY kids collect books for neighbors in need
Students from Peabody and Idlewild elementary schools held a children’s book drive during December to join a new national campaign called Books Make it Better. The two schools collected more than 800 books that will be dispersed to neighborhood families in need as well as local Head Start families.
Books Make it Better was created by a few moms who became aware of the achievement gap among socioeconomic classes. Their research found that 61 percent of children from low-income families had no books at home. And the ratio of books to children is 1 to 300 in low-income neighborhoods. There are many organizations in Memphis that are fighting for early literacy and the students at Peabody and Idlewild wanted to do their part. ~ Mandy Grisham
