People are the neighborhood’s best presents
By June Hurt, CYCA president
Last week, I received a great email from a resident singing the praises of various “people presents” that show up to her home every weekday to take her to get her cancer treatments. Most likely written in the middle of the night while she was juiced up on steroids, the email read just like a kid at Christmas describing everything she found under the tree, complete with run-on sentences and omitted words.
It’s one of the best emails I’ve ever received. When the CYCA initially learned that she needed these rides, a few phone calls secured a group of CY volunteers who agreed to take turns taking her to treatment. She wrote about the pre-pickup excitement before opening the door and getting to meet a new, fun and interesting friend. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Cooper-Young is full of “people presents” disguised as normal people walking around doing extraordinary things for their neighbors every day, from building a neighbor a chicken coop to just stopping in for a cup of coffee and some company. Sometimes I’m lucky enough to share a laugh with my neighbors in my driveway after a stressful day at work, and I feel fortunate to receive “presents” like that.
Speaking of being social, now that spring is here, it’s time to get off our lazy butts and get together with our block clubs! You say you don’t have a block club? Then start one! No experience required. Just dust off those casserole dishes, and fire up those grills, people! Feel free to come on over to Evelyn Avenue to see how we do it … YOU HEAR THAT NELSON AVENUE!?! Bring it on!
