Healthy Living: Are you grounded?

By Larrie Rodriguez

Sometimes we enjoy having our head in the clouds. When we are blissfully unaware of reality, it can be a welcome respite from the days when life feels dark and gloomy.

But keeping our head in the clouds can be risky. When we are not connected to our bodies and surrounding environment, we don’t have a strong sense of direction or purpose. We are just floating. It’s all too easy to disconnect from the world when it starts to feel overwhelming.

When we are tired or stressed, it may seem there’s very little we can do to change the frantic pace at which the world is spinning. That spinning feeling of disorientation or emotional dizziness is a sure sign that we may not be grounded.

Let’s face it: the clouds are beautiful, but it’s helpful to have our feet on the ground. No matter how we choose to visualize “groundedness,” the following tips and tools may help you to reconnect with your body:

Walk barefoot

Shoes are great but can disconnect you from the earth beneath your feet. With the warmer temperatures, now is the perfect time to bare your feet!

Get your hands dirty in the garden. Hunt down a patch of grass, lay face down and give Mother Earth a big hug for being so amazing!

Dance and/or sing

Step away from your computer.  Turn on some of your favorite music and sing and dance like no one is watching you. Ask someone to join you!

Meditate in whatever way is most natural to you. It is an excellent way for you to come back into your body to feel more grounded and safe!
