CYCA President June Hurt (back) and Suzzane Striker at the 2012 Cooper-Young Food Drive.
Another Cooper-Young Festival weekend has come and gone, and, unfortunately, this one was marred by the loss of a dear friend and long time Cooper-Young Community Association volunteer. On the Thursday before festival, Suzzane Striker, winner of the 2012 Alexia Hampton Award, lost her battle with cancer. For those not in the know, Suzzane tirelessly organized and ran the Cooper-Young Food Drive for the past few years as well as made all the wonderful baked goodies for our general meetings and for the winners of the Great Pumpkin Contest. She did all this while undergoing radiation and chemotherapy treatments.
Suzzane was a quirky and spunky soul and used her baking skills to bring smiles to the faces of her friends and neighbors as well as inches to my waistline. Once, after a particularly hard week, I came home to a dozen chocolate cupcakes on my doorstep with a note that said, “Chocolate fixes everything.” Suzzane was incredibly intuitive when it came to knowing when something was wrong, even when you tried to hide it. She made me laugh, and I will miss her dearly.
On a lighter note, Suzzane’s passing reminds me that we need to come up with new prizes for this year’s Great Pumpkin winners … sigh. Also the 5th Annual Cooper-Young Regional Beerfest is just around the corner, so buy your tickets before they are sold out! Seriously. It sells out every year, so don’t come whining to me about not getting tickets. Come see me in the CYCA Booth and be sure to pick up a beerfest t-shirt and a few pretzel necklaces for your sweetie! A good time will be had by all!
