Letter From the president: Cooper-Young treasures hard to resist

The Annual Cooper-Young Yard Sale is coming up fast, and I can’t wait to see what my neighbors’ attics have to offer my cramped bungalow! I mostly like to ride my bike around and talk to people about the neighborhood, but sometimes it’s hard to resist picking though the various treasure troves of others’ personal belongings. I get particularly amused with some wives and girlfriends attempts to get rid of what they consider items of horrible taste owned by their significant others. Invariably, I hear some poor Joe exclaim, “Hey, what are these (pants, shirts, various items of tacky decor) doing out here!?!” I involuntarily laugh out loud every time.

I am also amazed at how many “leg lamps,” of the type made famous by the classic film A Christmas Story, are still lingering throughout the neighborhood. I see at least one every year. A couple of years ago, I swear on a farmer’s almanac that I saw four.

Whether your motives are pure or slightly sneaky, cleaning house is always a good thing.  Purging is good for the soul, or at least getting rid of the outdated or tacky is.  So grab your folding tables and yard signs. Make sure that you have price tags and plenty of change. The hordes of bargain shoppers are coming soon!  See you there!
