New life for Central-York lots

Cooper-Young businessman Mehdi Abesi has purchased the troubled parking lot at the corner of Central Ave. and York and the adjoining building at 2256 Central with plans mixed-use development that is tentatively drawing praise from neighborhood advocates.

Abesi, owner of Fred Remmers Rug Cleaners & Oriental Rug Gallery at 2186 Central, bought the two parcels for $475,000. He says he is planning a three-or-four story development with retail-commercial space on the ground floor and residential units above. Abesi is basing his plans on the Gulch, a new, popular development in Nashville where he operates another rug business.

Abesi’s project would represent a dramatic turnaround for the properties. Last year the previous owner of the corner lot drew the ire of neighborhood activists when she paved it for parking without getting approval.
