This month’s issue of the Lamplighter is all about the annual Cooper-Young Festival on September 19th, but what many may not know is that the unofficial kickoff to the festival weekend is the night before.
The Cooper-Young Festival Friday 4-Miler is organized by the Cooper-Young Community Association and will be held at 7 p.m. September 18th. The race starts under the Cooper-Young trestle and takes a maximum of 2,500 runners on a winding, scenic route through our historic neighborhood.
If you are a runner, there is still time to participate; registration is open right up until the starting pistol. For complete registration information and to register online, visit cooperyoung4miler.racesonline.com. It only costs $30 to sign up, and you get one of our gorgeous long sleeve Zorrel Dri-Balance running shirts with our unique 2015 design. Registration also gets you into the race after party. And if you just want a shirt with wanting to run, you can sign up as a “spirit runner.”
It takes a lot fo people to run a race, however, and there are other ways to participa te besides lacing up. Our race is almost entirely supported by volunteers, and we have so many ways that you can help out. You can check out the list of positions and sign up at http://www.volunteerspot.com/login/entry/441002162041 (or find the link on our Facebook page). You can always call in at the office to find out more, just give us a shout at 901-272-2922.
Finally, one of the unique aspects of our race are the “Light the Way” parties that neighbors organize along the race route. Some organizers pick a theme and go over the top while others keep it simple. It doesn’t matter as long as everyone has a great time cheering on the runners. We love our “Light the Way” parties so much that we have a friendly competition with rewards for the top three parties. To be eligible for the contest, just register your party with the CYCA office by calling in, emailing us at email@example.com, or dropping by our office Monday-Thursday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Every registered party will even receive one free entry to the race so you can cheer on your favorite runner.
