Every month we spotlight a vendor from one of the Cooper-Young neighborhood’s two farmers markets. This issue we meet Randy and Jo Alexander of Tubby Creek Farm.

Located in Ashland, Mississippi, Tubby Creek Farm is committed to providing superior quality fresh fruits, vegetables, and pasture raised pork, goat, and chicken to our local community through our Community Supported Agriculture program, farmers markets, and chef sales. The Alexanders like to say they grow their food with love, sunshine, water, and a lot of compost but no synthetic chemicals because they are devoted to the safety of our food and the health of the land.

Where are you from?

Randy is originally from Phoenix, Arizona, and Jo grew up in Maine. We met in Memphis is 2008.

When and why did you start farming?

Jo started dreaming about farming as a career while working on sustainable farms in the upper Midwest. In Randy she met someone equally enthusiastic and willing to embark on a new adventure.

What is your favorite part about farming?

We both love working outdoors and being closely in tune to the cycle of the seasons.  We love the constant challenge and satisfaction of growing food for people.

What is your favorite dish to cook?

A completely farm-grown meal is utterly satisfying. Jo is a master at using whatever vegetables are in abundance in simple preparations that allow the flavor of the fresh produce to shine.

How do you relax?

A rainy day game of Scrabble is a favorite around here. It’s pleasant to take time to hang out with the animals and play with our cats and dogs. A real treat is having friends stop by. We especially enjoy talking with folks interested in getting into farming.

What is your favorite part about the Cooper Young Community Farmers Market?

There are so many things that we love! Jo loves visiting with shoppers, other vendors, and market volunteers. It’s a friendly environment and just the right size for our business. We also appreciate how authentic the market is and that patrons can be confident farmers grow everything they sell.
