New Year brings planning for a new Cooper-Young; CYCA solicits community input for five-year plan
The New Year has already brought some big changes to Memphis: a new mayor, a new city council, and a host of new developments are all coming together to create a new future for our wonderful city. For many years, Cooper-Young has been recognized as one of the best neighborhoods in Memphis, but who knows what the future will bring? We at the Cooper-Young Community Association believe 2016 is the year to plan our future and plant the seeds for an even better community. This is the time to come together and create a five-year vision for our neighborhood and we need your help.
We are inviting each and every resident to help us create a long-term plan for Cooper-Young. Do you have a great project you’d like to see in the neighborhood? Do you already have a project that could use some help? We want your ideas now more than ever and in the coming months we’ll give you two different ways to share your thoughts on Cooper Young.
First, we will be dusting off and up-dating our annual survey. This is a great way to get a lot of information from a big cross-section of the community, and it only takes a few minutes of your time. You’ll be seeing this survey pop up online and even in your mailbox soon, so when the time comes, please take a few minutes and fill it out for us.
Second, we’re excited to be working with resident Sanne Roijmans to run two focus group sessions. These won’t be your daddy’s focus groups, though; each session will be a hands-on workshop designed to get you thinking about specific goals and projects for the neighborhood. These sessions will take place on two Saturdays — February 13th and March 5th — at 10 a.m. The first Saturday will focus on generating a number of ideas while the second will use those ideas to come up with specific projects for the community. Participants will get to show off their ideas to the neighborhood in a social event in late March or early April. We need a good group of people to participate in these focus groups; it would be best if you can attend both, but we’d love to have you even if you can only make one session. If you’d like to participate in these unique events, we need you to RSVP by calling 901-272-2922 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as possible.
We hope everyone is as excited as we are to share our vision for our great neighborhood. We’ll be hard at work for the next several months finding out what YOU want us to do, and we’ll be presenting the plan as early as July. So keep an eye out for that survey, sign up for one of our focus groups, and let us know how we can all work together to plant the seeds for an even brighter future in Cooper-Young. — Kristen Schebler
